Naturally I jumped at the chance having been a fan of BASIC for nearly 10 years. One release into the series the project seems to have taken on a life of its own and a website is being planned at www.basicsinglesclub.com while all sorts of ideas are being bounced around between Eamonn, the ever-enthusiastic Michael at Reverb and myself. There will be another 11 releases to come (with 11 new illustrations for the cover artwork) so keep checking back for updates! You can preview the tracks here or visit Reverb Records for more info. Concepts behind the artwork stem from acid inspired 80s and 90s rave club flyers, scifi film posters, nodding to acid inspired imagery and marijauna infused spirituality, but I wanted to give the artwork a fresher, contemporary feel as the music will be remasters and reworks of old tracks. Shape and colour are used as details throughout the pieces, with abstract landscapes, repeating patterns and abstractions of shape and colour used to reflect the music mood and style. There will be a reference on each sleeve, such as diagrams, symbol, constellations, planetary alignments etc, indicating the month of the tracks release. There will also be a narrative to the series, with the viewer being the main character in the storyline, but it's also up to the viewer to interpret the story from their own personal reference points. In hindsight I wish that I was running with the arctic landscapes for another sleeve or two but I also don't want the latter part of the narrative development to be too sudden or quick. I was just starting to get comfortable with technique and style for the arctic sleeves but I suppose it's a good thing to not get too familiar and try to keep the series fresh.
